(aNewDomain Article) Linux Goes Gaming: Valve and Steam Client Along for Ride

Yup, you read that right.  According to Linux guru and writer Michael Larabel of the Phoronix.comValve is diving right into hardcore Linux game development.  In a recent interview with Valve’s Managing Director of Video Game Development Gabe Newell, Michael uncovered the dream plan for the Linux gamer’s Holy Grail: Native Linux gameplay.  In short, Valve is going all in on Linux development and this is huge.

So why is this a big deal?  Well, Linux users have been waiting a long time on native gameplay and this is the first glimmer of hope offered by a major development studio in some time.  For those new to Linux, users have to use emulators or other utilities to play most games on their systems.  Even when running games in an emulated or pass-through type environment, most games still don’t function as well as if they were running in a native environment.  This chokes system resources and ultimately defeats the purpose of running a lean Linux implementation like Ubuntu in the first place.  (For a great run down on Ubuntu check out Meet Ubuntu by our very own Ant Pruitt.)  Though no one truly knows how many Linux users there are, it would appear Valve’s interest lies in supporting the open source community by bringing their platform to the table.  It doesn’t hurt to also be the first major gaming development house to do so.

A lot of our community — our readers, writers and editors lean heavily on Google + as a sharing and collaboration platform — weighed in on what they thought about its cleaner look and on what some considered to be  excessive whitespace.

(aNewDomain Article) DDOS Attacks Continue: Anonymous Schedules CISPA Attacks for April 20

As I reported yesterday, Anonymous Goes on Worldwide DDOS Spree, Anonymous and its many subgroups are hitting  government and big commercial sites worldwide with Denial of Service attacks (DDOS). And it’s ongoing.

Multiple attacks began as early as Monday of this week.  A majority of the attacks do appear to be nothing more than “botnet” type distributed denial of service attacks (DDOS), though some target lists I located indicate plans for more serious damage.

The first series of attacks yesterday were organized by the loosely-knit hacker community known as Anonymous, which made a call to arms for its legions to hit sites — particularly those who are, it said, “anti-piracy advocates” in the Netherlands. DDOS attacks began as instructed — at 20:00 GMT yesterday.

(aNewDomain Article) Anonymous Goes on Worldwide DDOS Spree

Roughly 12 hours ago worldwide hacker group Anonymous called on its masses to assemble and begin targeted denial of service attacks on multiple websites of governments.  Most recently it targeted DC.gov and NYC.gov in these attacks, which lasted well over an hour.  The target list seems to be expanding, though it is as yet unclear how large or widespread the attacks really are.

(aNewDomain Article) Space Shuttle Discovery: Final Mission, Today’s Flight, Events

The Space Shuttle Discovery made its final voyage today from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to its new home at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum: Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in the Washington D.C. area.

It was an emotional experience to witness — from my home in Northern Virginia, I shot the above photos of one of the final remaining STS Shuttles take a ride atop a NASA-modified 747. That’s the typical means of transport for the STS platform. It’s the end of an era. The Shuttle program supplied so much knowledge and fascinating data over the years.

(aNewDomain Article) Google Docs: How to Use Spell Check/Auto Correct

In its ongoing attempt to make Google Docs more and more like your standard desktop word processor, Google recently revamped its spellchecker. Now it has spell check suggestions.

For instance, the new features will not only inform you of a misspelled word and make a suggestion, it will also identify words for capitalization.  (i.e., names, locations, etc.)  Google has also added contextual recommendations, too.  This feature lets you ensure proper word usage and see potential options for selection.
